Mythbusters Voice Fire Extinguisher Test

Charles Kellogg made a brave claim - That he could extinguish a fire using only his voice!!!

Test 1: Can an non-amplified voice can put out a flame

Test 2: Can sound alone can put out a fire.
  1. BUSTED:

    An un-amplified voice cannot extinguish a candle! After testing this myth in several frequencies the flame tends to do an interesting dance in relation to the sound being project. But not put out. Even with their use of loud speaker at different ranges%u2026the flame remained.
  2. CONFIRMED:

    Interesting Side Note: A singer in a local group put the candle out through amplification of his voice through the use of speakers.

    A pure, amplified tone was able to put out a well-sized fire. This can be done because the pressure waves from the sound disrupt the air enough to snuff out the flame.

    Also, using a high explosive bomb can put out flames. The logic is because the blast wave pushes the oxygen that fuels the fire away. Another theory is that the explosives use up the oxygen so quickly, that the fire cannot sustain itself.
